Have You Ever Seen the Rain?

Rain on Allen Avenue, South Riverdale
After being teased for so many days — a sparse splattering here, some patchy spitting there — the rain is finally coming down in earnest. I heard the first drops hit the skylight — thock, thock thock — just before the sky opened up to send silver ribbons guttering down. As I perched at our front window to snap this photo I could smell the steamy heat rising from the thoroughly baked sidewalks and hear the water rushing in rivulets to the sewer grates, collecting grit and scorched, dessicated leaves on its way.
I could sit and watch, listen to the rain for hours. Sweet release.
